His mum committed suicide by drowning her self in the River Sambre 12th March 1912, 2 years after Rene started drawing lessons, he was only 13 and was apparently there when the body was retrieved. In 1922 he married Georgette Berger who he had met as a child in 1913. In 1926 he produced his first piece of surreal art, which as slated by critics. He became depressed by the failure of his first exhibition in 1927 and he moved to Paris where he became friends with Andre Breton and became involved in a surrealist group. He moved back to Brussels in 1930 after little impression in Paris and he resumed work in advertising, his work only really became popular in the 1960’s but in 1967 he died in his own bed from pancreatic cancer.
